With no serious opposition from the American people, our Congress, or our court system, Trump has ruthlessly run roughshod over our nation, its Constitution, and its laws. In other words, the people of a democracy allowed that democracy to become an autocracy. Collectively, the American people have disastrously failed themselves as a democratic nation. In yet other words, the USA has become an illiberal democracy through its own political shortcomings.

Why has there been no significant disavowal of the president among Evangelicals? It is because they believe in his conservative politics, completely ignoring altogether their own conservative views on what has long been known as the Social Gospel.

Protestants allow their clergy to marry, but in doing so we have turned many Protestant parsons into bigamists. For the past five centuries, too many of us felt married to our spouses, but also married to our congregations or to other clerical positions.

There are never enough prophets, because too many preachers are too pastoral to be prophetic. Now is the time for all good men and women to step up to the plate and take mighty swings at what is going on with the snake oil salesmen and the speakers of smooth words.
